When Despair Comes

Last week was a tough week. A roller coaster of emotions kinda week. And because I am prone to cynicism and depression, I spent several days in a cocoon of despair. But to my credit, I did not stay there. My soul told me that the only thing to do to move forward in right action, was to work to make my corner of the world beautiful. But first I had to start by recognizing where beauty and grace were already around me. So that’s what I decided to do last weekend, go look for beauty. And the Universe, doing what it does, began to show me beautiful things, sometimes in subtle, and other times in not-so-subtle ways.

One of the not-so-subtle ways was at a library book sale where I found a book by John O’Donohue called, “The Invisible Embrace Beauty: Rediscovering the True Sources of Compassion, Serenity, and Hope,” and in the first few pages, I came across this,

Looking for beautiful things last weekend helped fortify me for what struggles lie ahead. I think that this may be the only thing that will save me, the only thing that will save us, this search for beauty in ourselves, our world, and one another.

This is what the Soul Geography journey is all about. It’s about being here, right now, with reality as it is, and then taking the next step, and then the next. It’s about desiring and paying attention, it’s about learning to ride our emotional waves, and it’s about choosing to drop old storylines, and considering newer ones. It’s about profound grief and profound beauty.

The path is not easy, and while it seems counterintuitive, we need suffering to grow. But the suffering doesn’t have to be debilitating, and the journey doesn’t have to be so hard. As your coach, I am trained to guide and support you wherever your life path finds you, teaching you how to connect with the yearnings of your soul about how you want your life to be, so you can start leading your life from the inside out, following the geography of your soul.
